Underground Grease Interceptor Installation Case for Commercial Kitchen Wastewater

Commercial kitchens in restaurants, hotels, canteens, and food-processing facilities generate wastewater containing grease, food residues, and suspended solids.

Without proper pretreatment, these contaminants may accumulate inside drainage pipes, cause unpleasant odors, increase the risk of blockages, and place additional pressure on downstream wastewater systems.

For this project, a stainless steel underground grease interceptor was installed to collect and pretreat grease-containing kitchen wastewater. The underground configuration saves valuable surface space while providing an organized and practical wastewater pretreatment solution.

Project Overview

The installation position was determined according to the existing drainage layout, pipe elevation, available space, and site conditions.

The installation team prepared the excavation area, positioned the interceptor, connected the inlet and outlet pipes, and adjusted the equipment to the required level.

As shown in the installation case, the interceptor contains several internal treatment sections and a solids-screening area. Kitchen wastewater first enters the unit, where larger food particles and solid waste are intercepted.

The wastewater then passes slowly through the internal chambers. During this process, grease rises toward the surface because of the density difference between oil and water, while heavier particles settle at the bottom. Pretreated wastewater is discharged through the outlet, while accumulated grease and solids can be removed during routine maintenance.

Main Advantages

Space-Saving Underground Installation

The interceptor is installed below ground, helping preserve usable space around kitchens, service areas, and commercial buildings.

Multi-Chamber Structure

Internal baffles extend the wastewater flow path and provide more time for grease separation and solids settlement.

Food-Waste Screening

A removable basket or solids-screening section can capture larger food residues before they enter the downstream drainage system.

Stainless Steel Construction

The stainless steel tank has a smooth surface that is easy to clean and suitable for humid wastewater environments. Dimensions and pipe connections can be customized for different projects.

Flexible Configuration

The inlet, outlet, internal chamber arrangement, and overall equipment size can be adapted to site conditions, wastewater flow, and pipeline direction.

Convenient Maintenance

Reserved access openings allow operators to remove floating grease, settled solids, and screened waste during scheduled cleaning.

Installation Process

The main installation procedures for this project included:

  1. Confirming wastewater flow, pipeline elevation, and installation location;

  2. Preparing the excavation and foundation;

  3. Placing the grease interceptor in the designated position;

  4. Connecting the kitchen wastewater inlet and treated-water outlet;

  5. Checking equipment level and pipe-joint sealing;

  6. Conducting a water test before backfilling;

  7. Reserving accessible inspection and maintenance openings.

The equipment should remain level and stable during installation. Adequate access must also be maintained for future inspection, grease removal, and cleaning.

Typical Applications

Underground grease interceptors are suitable for:

  • Restaurants and restaurant chains

  • Hotel and resort kitchens

  • School, hospital, and factory canteens

  • Shopping malls and commercial complexes

  • Central kitchens

  • Food-processing facilities

  • Catering centers

  • Commercial kitchen drainage renovation projects

Customized Grease Separation Solution

Every project has different wastewater volumes, grease loads, peak discharge rates, pipe dimensions, and installation conditions.

Correct equipment selection should consider the daily wastewater volume, peak flow rate, inlet and outlet pipe size, available installation space, and cleaning requirements.

Based on the customer’s site dimensions, kitchen capacity, wastewater flow, and pipeline layout, we can assist with equipment selection, structural configuration, connection customization, and installation support.
